What to Wear for Your Engagement Session (And How to Make the Most of It)
So you’ve booked your engagement session—yay! This is one of my favorite types of shoots to do with couples because it’s relaxed, personal, and full of laughter and real connection. But I totally get that once the initial excitement settles in, the questions start rolling: What should we wear? Should we bring anything? How do we even prep for this?
Don’t worry - this post has you covered. Below is a guide I’ve put together to help you feel confident and prepared. It’s packed with outfit tips, preparation advice, and some gentle reminders that this session is about you, not about perfection.
Let’s get into it.
Dress Like You
The best outfit you can wear is the one that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Don’t feel like you need to wear something trendy if it’s not your vibe. Be you - that’s who your partner fell in love with, and that’s who I want to photograph.
If you are looking for further guidance, I love neutrals! Earth tones and soft, neutral shades look good on everyone and always photograph beautifully. Think warm browns, muted greens, soft blues, beige, or cream. Avoid bold patterns or logos, which can be distracting and take attention away from your connection.
Add Variety with Two Looks
To get the most variety from your shoot, I suggest bringing two outfits - one dressy and one perhaps a bit more casual. That way, we can capture a mix of vibes that show off different sides of your relationship. One could be something you'd wear for a romantic dinner out, and the other something comfy you'd wear for a walk in the park.
Don't Forget the Details
These small touches go a long way in helping your session run smoothly and look polished:
Fresh manicure: We’ll be focusing on lots of close-up shots of your hands and ring, so treat yourself to a little nail refresh! (P.s. as long as your nails are clean and trimmed, I don’t care how you got them that way lol! Do what feels right for you.)
Mini mirror + makeup: For quick touch-ups, especially if it’s hot, windy, or you’re doing a location change.
Water: Staying hydrated is important, especially if we’re doing a lot of walking or it's warm out.
Props that reflect you: A cozy blanket, your dog, a bottle of wine, your favourite book - if it’s part of your relationship, bring it! These little things help tell your story.
Leave Expectations in the Car
Seriously - this is not about being perfect. Let go of any pressure to perform or look a certain way. Come ready to embrace the wind, laugh through awkward moments, and maybe even dance in the rain. Every session is different, and that unpredictability is what makes the magic happen.
Be Present
Take a moment before the shoot to reflect on your journey together. Think about your first date, your favourite inside jokes, and how far you’ve come. These little reflections help you connect with each other during the shoot and bring out the genuine love that I’m here to capture.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, your engagement session should feel like an extension of who you are as a couple. Wear what feels good, bring what you love, and let’s make some beautiful memories that are just as fun to create as they are to look back on. XOXO!
