A Documentary-Style Post-Wedding Couples Session at High Park in Toronto, ON
G&S (both using he/they pronouns) inquired with me sometime in March, wondering if they could book in for a couples session. They were getting married in April and honeymooning in Toronto for a week afterwards. They’d been long distance between Alabama and Calgary for 7 years and now it was time to get married and work to move closer together for the first time. EEEEK!!! I was so, so happy to receive their inquiry and, subsequently, their booking… They wanted a nature vibe, they we decided on High Park, and the plan was set! Then we counted down to shoot day…
A Heart-Filled Shoot Day
Once we met at High Park, we were chatting whilst walking deeper into the park to look for our first photo spot. G&S mentioned they had dropped off their rings to get resized and unfortunately didn’t get them back in time for the shoot. I said that was totally okay and they knew they were married, so no ring was going to change that! As we were getting settled into our first photo spot, G looked down and spotted… wait for it… A RING. A RING WITH A HEART SET IN IT. WHAT IN THE HECK SERENDIPITY CRAZINESS IS THAT. Oh, AND IT FIT THE BOTH OF THEIR RING FINGERS.
The fact that this happened right at the beginning of our session, even before I hit the shutter on my camera… I knew this was going to be a good session.
Exploring High Park
After we got over the absolute SHOCK of finding a ring on the ground, we wandered around High Park, looking for the most ideal backdrops to set their love against.
I directed them with intentional prompts and let their personalities and chemistry shine through. And dang, did they SHINE!
A photographer sometimes only gets an hour to get to know their couple, and to be able to carry this experience in a way that allows them to be authentic to themselves is… truly magical. I love my job.
A Walk Around the Neighbourhood
After a bit of strolling through High Park, I asked if the two of them would be down to take it through the neighbourhood bordering High Park for more of a city feel. They agreed and we took our booty’s through the neighbouring streets!
We laid on a hill, giggled (a LOT), found some beautiful graffiti, and more hearts on the way.
I’m so happy with the outcome of this shoot… I credit this to their love, their flexibility/openness to try new things, and my direction (hehe). Photo sessions with your love are such a special way to have fun with each other, to play and laugh and share in the intimacy you have between each other.
If you’re looking for an inclusive documentary-style photographer in the Toronto area, don’t hesitate to reach out! I would love to document all of your most special moments. <3
