A Golden Evening Maternity Session at James Gardens, Etobicoke

There’s something especially beautiful about photographing a family just before it becomes a little bigger - and even more so when they’re preparing to welcome two babies at once! Yes - these two are having twins!
This early August evening at James Gardens in Etobicoke, Ontario was the perfect setting for this maternity session. The sun was still beaming through the trees late in the day, creating that warm, golden light that makes everything feel a little softer. And in the middle of it all were M and F, soaking in this incredibly special season of their lives as they prepare to welcome their twins.
Maternity Photography in Etobicoke

Maternity sessions are already an opportunity to slow down and document a pretty fleeting chapter. Rather than making the session feel overly posed or formal, I wanted their photos to feel like them. We wandered through James Gardens together, stopping whenever we found a little pocket of beautiful light, greenery, or an interesting background.
I guided them through the session with gentle posing and direction, giving them enough structure to feel comfortable while leaving plenty of room for the moments that happened naturally in between.
And those in-between moments are some of my favourites.
M tucking F's hair behind her ear. The two of them giggling together. The little glances, touches, and moments of closeness that don't necessarily happen because a photographer tells you to do them - they happen because you're comfortable with the person you're standing beside.
Those are the photographs that make a session feel personal.
Do You Need a Photography Permit at James Gardens?

One of the questions I often hear when clients are choosing an outdoor location is whether a photography permit is required.
For smaller, personal photo sessions at James Gardens, a photography permit is not required. This makes the location a particularly convenient option for families looking for beautiful outdoor maternity photography in Etobicoke or Toronto without needing to pay a bajillion dollars for permits.
As always, if you're planning something outside the scope of a typical small photography session - such as a wedding!!! - it's worth checking the current rules and requirements with the City of Toronto before your session.
For a simple maternity session like this one, though, James Gardens offers plenty to work with.

A Maternity Session Before Everything Changes

There’s a particular kind of anticipation that comes with photographing expecting parents.
You know that the people in front of your camera are about to enter an entirely new chapter. Their lives are about to change in ways they can't fully imagine yet.
For M and F, that change is coming twice over.
I am so incredibly happy for these two as they prepare to welcome their twins. Getting to photograph them during this quiet moment before their babies arrive was such a privilege.
One day, these photographs will be more than beautiful images from an evening in the park. They'll be photographs of the two of them before they became four.
And that's exactly why I love maternity photography.
